Fiber to Dyed Yarn to Textile Kits

Our signature Fiber to Dyed Yarn to Textile Kit consists of three components. The first component is a breed-specific fiber, hand washed to maintain lock structure with the tips all oriented the same way, then hand combed into top as two 50 g. balls ready to spin (100 g./3.5 oz. total), as well as an information sheet about the specific breed of fiber, its characteristics, lock length, suggested spin information, and appropriate textile usage. The second component is an easy-to-use Wool Tincture dye packet, with the dye and citric acid contained in individual tea bags with step-by-step instructions. The third component is a choice of a knitting or crocheting pattern, which highlights the particular breed's characteristics and strengths. All neatly packaged in a printed canvas tote bag.

Spin Off Kits

This kit consists of three components. The first component is a breed-specific fiber, hand washed to maintain lock structure with the tips all oriented the same way, then hand combed into top as two balls, ready to spin in the amount suggested in the pattern chosen, usually 4-6 oz. An information sheet about the specific breed of fiber, its characteristics, lock length, suggested spin information, and appropriate textile usage is included. For the most part, more fiber is required to make these items; therefore the prices vary, depending on the amount of fiber required. The second component is an easy-to-use Wool Tincture dye packet, with the dye and citric acid contained in individual tea bags with step-by-step instructions. The third component is your choice of a Spin Off pattern as a separate downloadable pdf. When you hit on the buy button on the Spin Off pattern, you will be taken to the Long Threads Media site to purchase this downloadable file, which will be in most cases the particular magazine that the pattern is in but in a few cases will be just the pattern itself. As an affiliate with Long Threads Media, who produces Spin Off, I do receive a small commission from the sale. Clicking "View All" will show all available patterns.

Heritage Fleece Patterns

Each pattern was developed to go with a specific breed of wool, though the pattern can be used with a different breed. I made a knit sample of the pattern from the hand-washed and hand-combed fiber (100 g.) of that specific breed, which I then hand spun and hand dyed using one of the dye packets included with the kit. I wanted to make sure that these items would be attainable by spinners spinning to the suggested weight of yarn. The knitted samples are not included in the kit but are a visual example of what you can achieve with the specific breed of wool and the chosen pattern.

Wool Tincture Dyes

Wool Tincture Dye is an acid dye suitable for dyeing protein fibers in a very safe and easy-to-use application. Each individual packet is premeasured for you to achieve a predictable color using 100 g. of clean wool. There is no measuring and no mixing, as the dye itself as well as the citric acid are each contained in a tea bag that you put into a jar of hot water with your skein of yarn. In about 20 minutes your hand-spun yarn is effortlessly and beautifully dyed. See all the color choices available by clicking below.

Our How-To Book

After much testing of different methods for washing and preparing a fleece by hand, I have developed a slow, bite-sized way to process that produces organized locks arranged by tip orientation, opened up by flicking to create easy-to-comb fiber. Using this method, anyone can hand process a fleece at their own pace, according to what they have time and space to accomplish. Most equipment is affordable and can be locally sourced. There are a few items that are higher priced and that will need to be sourced through a local yarn shop or online. This picture book walks you through the whole process.
