About Heritage Fleece
Hi! I am Gail, and I started Heritage Fleece in 2025. The goal behind Heritage Fleece is to encourage spinners to spin not just for spinning's sake, but with a reachable goal in mind, for an intended, useful, wearable garment, and that they can be a nonprofessional spinner but still achieve a wearable garment. Another goal is to encourage anyone that it is possible to process a fleece by hand.
I learned to knit and crochet when I was nine but didn't pick knitting up again till my early twenties. I got my first sheep while in my thirties, but my computer job schedule just wasn't conducive to being a shepherdess. So I had to part with them. But little by little I started getting fleeces to spin. As the picture shows, I washed many fleeces in the washer, as was the recommended method, but each time was disappointed by the end result, being quite overwhelmed by the enormity of the straightening and combing job. So I developed a method of bite-size processing that fit my schedule and time frame but that kept the fiber locks in an organized cluster with the tips all going one way. And I found in the process that it produced a very enjoyable experience as well as product. My hope is you will also have a rewarding experience and enjoy the process.
